Project

The Shree Deaf and Impaired Hearing Residential Basic School (SDIHRB) is a type of comprehensive boarding school for deaf children and teenagers in Basatpur, Rautahat. It covers kindergarten up to and including grade 8, and the students range in age from 5 to 19 years. A total of 61 deaf children and adolescents live and study at the SDIHRB. They are cared for by three teachers and two nurses.

The government started the construction of a school building a few years ago, but never finished it due to financial difficulties. The SKIHRB was bursting at the seams. The 61 residents had only four rooms to share! These had to serve as sleeping quarters, classrooms and kitchens at the same time. The children badly lacked space to devote themselves fully to their education. Many families in Rautahat are very poor and people with disabilities have it extra hard. Education is the only chance these children have for a better life.

Chay Ya completed the construction of four classrooms and added another floor with four bedrooms and a bathroom to the boarding school. By now, four additional classrooms and eight dormitories are availale, so that girls and boys can sleep separately. In this way, the children finally have the peace and space they need to dedicate themselves to their education!

The government covered 15 % of the construction costs as well as all follow-up costs.

Sustainability Claimer

Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.

Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.

Updates

To ensure that the children can also engage in physical activity in a safe environment, Chay Ya Liechtenstein kindly agreed in December 2024 to take on the construction of a playground in addition to the residential home. This was inaugurated in December 2025.
