VOlunteering

in Nepal

How?

The willingness as a volunteer to make his time and resources available is gaining more and more interest, especially among young people. In a world where almost all our actions are money-driven or controlled by money, this interest in volunteering shows that it is possible to act as one large community, reaching out a helping hand to each other in times of need. Without expecting any financial compensation, thousands of young people set out every year to share their time, knowledge and support with people of all ethnicities and ages. This work of a community based on humanity and equality is a big part of humanitarian, medical and development aid, without which it would not be possible to help so many people affected by disease, natural disasters, poverty and wars.

Chay Ya volunteers benefit from our many years of experience in the most remote places in Nepal, our well-developed network of relationships throughout the country and our cooperation with local people, which allows us to act quickly and purposefully in emergencies. As a volunteer with Chay Ya you will experience the culture, the people, their customs and traditions at first hand, strengthen independent work and make a sustainable contribution to the development and reconstruction of the country. In addition, you will get a deeper insight into the work of an NGO and leave this multifaceted country with countless great memories and experiences and perhaps one or the other new friendship. We at Chay-ya don’t think that volunteers should be a source of income for an organization, after all you declare yourself willing to support us with your time, your know-how, your energy and your drive for action. We are very grateful and appreciate this. So we don’t charge you anything for our organizational effort in the background before, during and after the volunteer work. Only the travel costs and the local costs for accommodation and meals (or other personal expenses) are to be paid by you.
In the following you will find a short overview why a cooperation with Chay-ya is an excellent choice, which fields of work there are and how you can apply.

Benefits

Cooperation with local communities
Chay Ya’s success is due to the close cooperation with our partners in Nepal. As a volunteer you will experience this network of partner organizations and local communities first hand, which will give you a deep and authentic insight into the culture of Nepal, its society and our work.

Sustainable Volunteering
Your voluntary work with Chay Ya should be an event that you and the local people will remember for a long time afterwards. Our goal is a long-lasting effect of your commitment and a contribution to a more sustainable future. Whenever possible we try to implement the three pillars of sustainable development (environment, society and economy) in our projects. A very decisive point here is the exchange of knowledge between all participants in order to strengthen the country’s resilience. If possible, this knowledge transfer should take place on both sides and enrich you with new insights, perspectives and a deeper understanding of a previously foreign culture.

Broad network in Nepal
Due to our close relationships with our partner organization, we benefit from a well-developed network throughout Nepal. This network is of crucial importance as it is these people who are responsible for your accommodation, transport and stay in Nepal. Most of them have a good command of English and will try to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Small and transparent
We are a small family organization with a strong sense of community. All our volunteers are accepted as full members of our organisation and are involved in all decision-making processes regarding their stay. During your stay it will be impossible to avoid insights into our organisational structure and the work behind the scenes.

Reasonable prices
For your cooperation with Chay Ya we will not charge you any money for our administrative, organizational work and the preparation of your stay. We are thankful that there are people like you who give their time, energy and money to make a better future for Nepal possible. Your personal expenses like flight, board and lodging have to be paid by you because our donations are intended for the people of Nepal and our projects. In order to compensate for the organizational effort on our part, we ask you only for a small voluntary contribution of your choice. Here you will find further information.

Lasting relationships
Since most of our projects are located in a remote and rural area where a close relationship with the communities is essential, we have no doubt that you will make many new friends and acquaintances. Many of these people will assist you in your daily life, give you tips and tricks to make your life in Nepal easier, have some hiking tips ready and take your Nepali to a new level.

Detailed letter of recommendation
After completing your volunteer work in Nepal, our volunteer coordinator will meet with you to discuss the highlights, achievements and opportunities for improvement of the project. We will summarize your work and your contribution to Nepal’s development in a letter of recommendation. This will document your stay in Nepal and will be an advantage for future job interviews or applications. For us, this letter is an important resource for feedback and informs us about the progress of our projects.

field of use

The focus of our work is the reconstruction and development of infrastructure, schools and livelihood projects, as well as support in the education sector and the improvement of sanitary and health conditions in very remote regions of Nepal. Our projects also extend to permaculture gardens, governance and business start-up training. You can find our current and completed projects here. In general, we offer volunteer work in the areas of health & care, education & English teaching and construction & reconstruction. As we are committed to long-term and sustainable development, we expect a certain qualification for your volunteering in all areas. Unfortunately, we do not have the necessary capacities to enable you to volunteer with us if you do not have the necessary qualifications. If you are considering working with Chay Ya, the best thing is to get an overview of our current projects and ask yourself where your skills could make a valuable contribution to the entire community. If you are unsure or need more information about the volunteers you currently need, simply contact our volunteer coordinator.
