Project
Together with many supporters, we built a blind hostel for children with visual impairments on the grounds of the Shree Nepal Rastriya Inclusive School. Since spring 2022, 20 children have been living there and are attending the school. The Basic School comprises the grades from kindergarten to 6th grade (i.e. 7 grades in total) and is attended by about 90 students. Originally, the school consisted of seven very old classrooms. Due to the poor condition of the rooms, the local government decided to demolish four classrooms and replace them.
However, after the demolition of four rooms, only two new ones were built. Thus, for a while, seven grades shared five classrooms. The school was bursting at the seams. There was literally no room to meet individual needs, especially not those of the blind students and they were easily left behind. The situation was a burden for both the students and the teachers.
Therefore, we decided to add another floor and built four more classrooms. This provides the school with 9 rooms – 8 classrooms and 1 teacher’s room. The school will therefore be able to offer two more grades for older children also.
The local government has committed to cover 20% of the construction costs as well as all follow-up costs.
Sustainability Claimer
Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.
Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
