Shree Kalika Secondary School is the only secondary school in the municipality of Bagchaur in the district of Salyan, serving as the central educational institution for 290 children from the surrounding villages. The school is named after the nearby historic Kalika Temple, a culturally significant landmark in the community. The village itself is widely known for its orange cultivation, which contributes to the distinctive identity of the region.
The majority of the enrolled students belong to Dalit communities, who were formerly pejoratively referred to as “untouchables,” have historically been affected by systematic exclusion and to this day have less access to education, social, and political participation. Education is the key to breaking through discrimination and enabling social participation.
Currently, the school has a total of 18 classrooms, 10 of which are made of reinforced concrete, while the remaining 8 are covered with tin roof panels. Many of these older buildings are in poor condition, show visible damage, have partially collapsed, and have problems with leaky roofs. Four new classrooms and hygienic toilets for boys and girls are urgently needed to provide students with a safe and conducive learning environment.
Despite these limitations, the school has managed to set up a library, a science lab, and a computer room. Students in grades 9 to 12 receive computer lessons that prepare them for further studies and future career opportunities.
The Nepalese government has agreed to support the construction of the four new classrooms with 15 % of the costs.
Sustainability Claimer
Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.
Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
