Shree Nepal Rastriya Secondary School in Kuse, Jajarkot, suffered considerable structural damage as a result of the earthquake in November 2023. The current buildings are unusable for teaching, as some of them are no longer safe and could collapse at any moment. More than 300 students are enrolled at the school. The damage therefore affects the educational opportunities of a large number of children.

The municipality, which covers 15 % of the school’s construction costs and all future operating and maintenance costs, has approached Chay Ya for support. The reconstruction of this educational facility is not only crucial to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for the students. It also plays a central role in the recovery and stabilization of the entire community after the destruction caused by the earthquake.

For the construction of the school innovative “ECO2Bricks” will be used. These are made from local raw materials and industrial waste, which are mixed with a small amount of cement and pressed into stable, interlocking units. This construction method offers numerous advantages: it is earthquake-resistant, more environmentally friendly than conventional fired bricks (90 % less air pollution and 75 % less CO2 emissions!) and cost-effective. In addition, local entrepreneurs are supported through technical training, marketing and quality control, thus promoting local job creation and economic growth.

Sustainability Claimer

Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.

Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
