Project
Tarebhir Basic School was damaged in the 2015 earthquake, cracks were posing a danger to students and teachers. Two of the classrooms had been hit very hard, and another three did not meet the new earthquake-resistant building standards. In the summer of 2019, 52 students (4-10 years old) were attending the primary school from first to fifth grade. Tarebhir is the only school in the area; the nearest secondary schools can only be reached by walking more than 5 km.
By building seven new classrooms, as well as a computer room/library and a teacher’s room, the school could be expanded to a secondary school, up to grade 8. In addition, more toilets (2 for girls and 2 for boys) were built, as the number of students is expected to rise to 150 over the next years. The construction of the classrooms, the bathrooms and the financing of the teaching staff for three years was guaranteed by the Carnevali Foundation. In addition, the local community also has a 20 % share in the project and will fully cover the costs for the additional teachers we have hired after three years.
In June 2019, the construction of the new school building started and by February 2020, the plastering and painting of the walls had already been completed. Plumbing work on the toilets was underway when the Corona crisis caused an enforced halt to construction. Yet, despite the delay, the school was able to open ceremoniously at the end of July 2020, even though there were no classes at that time due to Corona. In the meantime – in March 2021 – the number of students has already grown to 150. We are pleased that they can now continue to attend school locally 😊
Sustainability Claimer
Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.
Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
