Kalaiya Provincial Hospital is the oldest hospital in Kalaiya Sub-metropolitan city. It is equipped to provide orthopedics, general surgery, prenatal and postnatal care etc. All together 6 MD (Master) doctors and 11 MBBS (Bachelor) doctors are available to serve patients of all age groups. Approximately 250 patients visit the hospital per day. The hospital is run by the government, and only charges a small fee for their services, so particularly poor and marginalized groups come here.
The hospital has recently established an operation theater where 15-20 orthopedic surgeries and 15-20 general surgeries are conducted per month, 10 baby deliveries per day and 20 Cesarian sections per month are taking place. Due to the lack of a blood bank in the city, the patient’s relatives have to arrange blood from the nearest district, Birgunj, which is 17 km away; a procedure which has led to many lost lives in emergency situations.
So Chay Ya wants to construct a new building with 8 rooms and 2 toilets to ensure 24-hour availability of blood for the whole city inside the hospital campus. The building will include a blood donation area, reporting room, blood storage, lab, staff room, kitchen, office- and enquiry room plus toilets.
The Nepali government has agreed to buy equipment, will pay 20 % of construction costs and will cover all follow-up costs.
