Surunga is a commercial center in the Jhapa district. It is located in the Koshi Province in the southeast of Nepal. Kankai is one of the fastest developing communities in Jhapa district. It is located on the banks of the Kankai River (also known as Kankai Mai by the locals).

There is a hostel for the deaf and hard of hearing in Surunga and a secondary school, the Shree Kankai Secondary School, which is also attended by hearing-impaired children.

There are currently 80 pupils aged 8 to 16 living at the hostel (39 boys and 41 girls), three teachers and one caregiver. There are only six rooms in total, so 12 to 15 pupils have to share one bedroom, which is very overcrowded and not a suitable environment for learning. The plan is to build four additional rooms to reduce the number of children per room and increase the number of regular students in the school.

We expect the number of pupils to increase from 80 to 100 after the expansion. The municipality will hire more teachers and caretakers and the quality of education will improve as a result.

The government has already committed to covering 20 % of the total construction costs for four new rooms.

Sustainability Claimer

Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.

Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
