Project
Shree Buddha Primary School runs classes from first to fifth grade and is located in Lar, at an altitude of 3,100 meters, a six-day walk from Arughat. The school lies in the center of Chhaikampar, so it is accessible from all the surrounding villages. Due to the earthquake in April 2015, the school partially collapsed, destroying all six rooms, but it could be rebuilt, and some materials could be reused.
To achieve this, the village community of Lar worked tirelessly – in only three months they managed to complete the shell including the roof! Not only did they have to haul and hew stones, but they also had to work on beams and plane boards. Then the plastering, flooring and furnishings were renewed. Construction was done using a dry-stone masonry method, along with wooden seismic beams to make the building earthquake resistant. Thanks to the innovative (partly transparent) roof, the children now get plenty of light when they are studying.
Completed in February 2017, the school building provides 50 students with classrooms and dormitory facilities with two toilets for male and female students. The office and library were also renovated. At the ceremonial opening, the Chay Ya team was able to rejoice with the entire village community.
Sustainability Claimer
Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.
Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
