Project

In the rural community of Jwalamukhi in Bagmati province, there is only one government school, the Shree Thulochaur Secondary School, the oldest school in the village with little light and an outdated building structure. The severe earthquake in 2015 also destroyed or damaged classrooms in Jwalamukhi, and lessons had to be held under the roof of a CGI slab in the meantime. Now the damaged parts are finally to be rebuilt.

The school is 17 km away from the district headquarters. The northern part of the school borders on historical sites, while the southern part is jungle land. 30 % of the inhabitants of Jwalamukhi are Dalit (the so-called untouchables).

Due to the lack of space for teaching and learning activities, the absence of a library, science lab, computer lab, meeting room, etc., all classes are overcrowded. There are plans to build four classrooms to reduce the number of children per room and increase the number of regular students in the school.

The government has already committed to covering 15 % of the total construction costs for four new rooms. We expect that the number of pupils will increase from 244 to 348 after the expansion, the municipality will hire more teachers and the quality of education will improve.

Sustainability Claimer

Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.

Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
