Project

Shree Mahadev Basic School is located in Sanjyalbada village at 1,950 m. It has recently been expanded to run classes up to 8th grade (before only students up to 5th grade could attend school here). Unfortunately, there is not enough space to accommodate three extra classes. Therefore, we are planning to construct a two-story building with five classrooms and clean toilets for boys and girls. To make sure the new building’s earthquake resistant, we will include an RCC frame and use eco-friendly CSEB bricks to build the walls. The local population will also be instructed in this simple building method.

In December 2021, the old building was demolished and the foundation laying ceremony of the new school took place.

Sustainability: Shubhakalika Rural Municipality will take care of 10 % of the construction costs and will pay for all wages and running costs after completion of the project.

Sustainability Claimer

Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.

Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.

Updates

Update January 2023
Unfortunately, monsoon was so heavy last summer that the roads to this remote region were washed away and the necessary brick-making machine could not be transported to the construction site. In the meantime, however, it has finally arrived in Sanjyalbada and so this month the CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Bricks) training for the local population could take place. In this inexpensive and environmentally friendly method, local materials – sand, earth and cement – are compressed into building bricks with the help of the machine. This eliminates the need to transport fired bricks from far away, and the method is also more earthquake resistant. For five days, the villagers were trained in the operation of the machine – hopefully, the construction can proceed quickly from now on!
