Project
There is only one basic school in Tarebhir, the two nearest secondary schools are more than 5 km away on foot. After the 2015 earthquake, the basic school only ranged from kindergarten to fifth grade and was located in an old, damaged building. However, in 2019-20, with the help of the Carnevali Foundation, we have already been able to construct a new, earthquake-proof and beautiful building, as well as add three more classes up to eighth grade. However, in order to continue attending secondary school, about 100 young people still have to walk more than 10 km every day.
At the moment, 120 students (48 boys and 72 girls) attend the playgroups up to grade 8 (4 to 14 years old); they are taught by nine teachers. In order to expand the school up to the tenth grade, eleven rooms plus additional toilet rooms are planned. To this end, the old prefab building, which until now has housed the kindergarten children and a small kitchen, is to be replaced by a new one with three-stories. In addition to classrooms, a library, a laboratory and a computer room are also planned in order to increase the quality of education. We expect the number of students to grow to 285 in the next few years.
The municipality has already agreed to cover 20 % of the construction costs and to finance the additional teachers needed.
Sustainability Claimer
Due to the special focus on sustainability, the teachers’ salaries as well as the teaching material at the schools we support are normally paid by the government.
Under special circumstances, such as in very remote schools or in the case of marginalised ethnic groups, these costs are covered by Chay Ya for one year.
