After several months of decline, numbers are unfortunately rising again in Nepal!
As of April 10, 2021, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has reached 279,725, with 2,800 active cases (for comparison, there were 21,830 in October 2020, and only 911 on March 1, 2021) and 3,039 deaths (https://covid19.mohp.gov.np/#/).
As before, these figures certainly do not reflect the whole truth, as the testing rate has been reduced even further. Plus, we are concerned about the figures from neighboring India, where record numbers of newly infected and corona deaths are currently being recorded.
Nevertheless, the quarantine obligation upon arrival in Nepal has been dropped and most people have resumed their normal lives and work (of course, many continue to suffer from the loss of tourism).
At least Nepal has already received 1 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine with financial help from India, so that according to the ministry, 85.65% of the frontline workers in the health sector have already received their first dose. In the meantime, another million doses of vaccine have been procured so that vaccination of people over 60 years of age can begin.
We sincerely hope that the feared next wave will not happen!
Chay Ya's Corona-Aid in 2020
We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished in Nepal last year. A total of nearly € 100,000 in emergency aid was distributed in all 7 provinces through Chay Ya:
20 isolation centers were equipped with medical equipment and protective gear, but also with the necessary beds to accommodate enough patients. Our health posts were also well stocked!
Approximately 2,500 families (that’s over 12,500 people!) were provided with our food aid packages.
Many, many thanks for your great help!
