The current situation in Nepal
As of April 22, Nepal has confirmed 45 cases of COVID-19 disease, 7 of them have been recovered. Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital is the designated primary hospital for the treatment of COVID-19; isolation wards, makeshift hospitals and quarantine centres have been established throughout the country.
Nepal Public Health Laboratory in Kathmandu was the only laboratory capable of testing for the disease as of 15 March 2020; laboratory capabilities were later expanded to other major cities.
As per now, it’s been a month since the country has been in a total lockdown. This has great economic impact. People are stocking basic goods, cooking gas as well as fuel. The government not being strong in the face of crisis in the past has led to disbelief. Despite a handful of companies that are operating online, almost all of the services are closed down.
This has directly impacted people of all social classes. The most impact is on daily wage workers and their families. They are left at the mercy of people who might show some compassion or worse, the government. The extension of this lockdown has created fear in people’s life without economic security.
Therefore, Chay Ya has planned to support those people who depend upon the daily wages and will suffer a lot during the time of this pandemic.
Chay Ya will help as follows:
- Chay Ya support will be in locations which requires greater support, mainly in Kathmandu due to the situation of the wage workers.
- Select the affected household based upon the data collected by local municipal ward office and our local partners. Based upon their list Chay Ya will select the neediest ones.
- One package will cost € 20,- (CHF 21,-) and will provide following food items: 25 kg rice, 2 kg lentils, 1 litre of vegetable oil, 1 kg of salt and 2-hand washing soap
- Our plan is to distribute at-least 250 families. An average household consists of 5 members. One package will last for about 30 days.
In the name of the needy families we thank you for making it possible to help at least some families in need.
