Corona Relief Vorarlberg
Six Vorarlberg initiatives join forces for
Covid relief aid in Nepal pulling together
Status as of May 22, 2021:
The COVID-19 total now stands at 505,643 documented infections, with over 208,000 added in the past four weeks alone. There are currently 115,806 active cases and 6,153 confirmed covid deaths.
In the last 24 hours alone, there have officially been 8,591 new cases and, tragically, an average of 180 deaths have been reported daily in the last two weeks.(Source: https://covid19.mohp.gov.np/)
There are far too few tests available, so the number of unreported cases must be estimated many times higher. The absolute curfew has been extended until further notice, and the international airport remains closed.
The hospitals lack everything: beds, staff, medicines, oxygen and tests. Patients are treated in parking lots or in tent quarantine stations on the ground. The families of day laborers are starving again because they have no income.
Situation in front of the Teku Hospital, Kathmandu
Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, named after Shukraraj Shastri, commonly known as Teku Hospital, is a public hospital in Teku, Kathmandu. It is the only hospital in Nepal specifically designated for the treatment of tropical and infectious diseases.
Unfortunately, the current situation in Nepal is much more dramatic than during the first wave.
That is why seven people from Vorarlberg have joined forces to start an emergency aid campaign.
These are Sabine Klotz (Chay Ya Austria), Eric Leitner (Rokpa Austria), Wolfgang Bartl (Let the children walk), Theo Fritsche, Dr. Klaus Zitt (School Projects) as well as the native Nepalese Maya and her husband Elmar Müller (Initiative Dhanyabad).
Together, the initiatives call for donations for the most necessary things in the quarantine stations (protective suits, masks, medicines, beds, etc.) and for food packages.

Prompt help from Chay Ya
10 quarantine stations, oxygen and food.
The aim is to support the Nepalese government in containing the virus, significantly reducing the number of infections and the death rate and keeping them at a low level. The country needs a “breathing space” to rebuild itself.
Chay Ya has identified two important phases for this.
1st phase
The chains of infection must be broken, because at the moment the virus is spreading completely uncontrolled among the population. For this, the quarantine stations must be equipped with
- Medical equipment
- Furniture (beds, mattresses)
- Food
be supplied. Chay Ya plans to supply 10 quarantine stations, mainly along the Indian border, because most infections enter the country from there. In addition, we are constructing a building for an oxygen plant in Pokhara, which can supply over 150 people.
We already provided Covid-19 with emergency aid last year and have thus already built up the necessary experience and infrastructure to be able to help effectively right away. Together with partner organizations on the ground, we have already taken off.
The government has set up makeshift Quran stations in disused schools or tents. UNICEF Nepal is providing hand-washing and drinking water facilities as well as oxygen on a large scale, in addition to our relief supplies.
Our stations are located in the following municipalities and districts:
2nd phase
Providing vulnerable families (day laborer families, families from slums) with food packages for one month. Many families have lost their source of income due to the virus and no longer have the means to obtain food.
Families living in slums suffer from acute malnutrition and are therefore even more vulnerable to the virus. Moreover, these families in particular have no means of distancing themselves, so the virus can spread there under optimal conditions.
In addition to the food pacts, we support doctors, nurses, orderlies, etc. in the hospitals with food, because they otherwise have no chance to have a meal due to their long shifts. The food is prepared by women’s initiatives, we provide the food.
