WASH* yourself, if you can!

Drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in development cooperation and disaster relief.

Content:

Drinking WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are basic human needs. It is therefore surprising that almost 785 million people still have no access to acceptable drinking water supplies, more than 2 billion people have no access to acceptable toilets and more than 3 billion people have no acceptable hand washing facilities. This has many negative consequences on health, nutrition, schooling or equality, among other things.

In Europe, we are in the privileged position of being able to remove this basic provision from our consciousness as a matter of course. Of course, only as long as there is no catastrophe, as the example of Covid19 and the associated importance of hand hygiene shows us.

With this background, WASH interventions form an important building block, both in disaster relief and in long-term global development as defined by the global community in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (SDG#6).

The State of Vorarlberg and the Austrian Red Cross want to raise awareness of the global interrelationships of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene within the framework of the Poolbarfestival. In a panel discussion they want to illuminate the topic from different perspectives, thus stimulating reflection on the active and constructive shaping of our global future.
